Each year during the time of the International Festival Bergen comes alive with daily art shows, music and theater performances. For the two weeks of the festival all the city’s hotels are fully booked and hotel prices rise with over 100%. To help the city’s many visitors, we turned our mobile home into a functioning full service hotel. With the kind permission of the Bergen recreational department (grønn etat), the car was parked in a public park across the street from the Bergen Kunsthall.

Critical Comment: The kunsthall – a hotel for art?

Increasingly the kunsthall functions as a hotel for art and the art public. The white cube which is supposed to function as neutral, homogenic space – a home for all art. However, the kunsthall has increasingly become a venue only for large expensive shows that make their way from one conglomerate to the next. It is like staying over at a business hotel – have you seen one room, you have seen them all. In this process we feel that art may lose the connection with the local place and situation.
